Planning to relocate your IT Network?

discussing office layout with floor plans

If you have a business, or you are in charge of moving your current company to a new facility and you have done this before, you know it’s safe to say Office IT Relocations in today’s age are much more complex than they were in the past.

Let’s face it: you can’t move employees into a new space without your voice and data cabling in place. Network cabling should be one of the first things a company thinks about, along with properly sizing the IT or Server Room.

From a network cabling / IT perspective, it pays to take careful stock of the new location. If you’re a growing e-commerce company moving into a space previously occupied by an accountancy financial services firm, do not assume the network cabling from the last tenant who occupied the facility you’re about to move into is in place and ready to go.

By putting a plan in place early on, you are in a much better position to minimise your downtime, reduce the number of problems, and respond more quickly to any that do arise.

At 5K Security Systems, we can help you move your office network fast and efficiently. Ready to get started?

How To Determine Your Cabling & Wiring Needs

1. Your Current Bandwidth Needs

Before starting your move, first evaluate your situation. Review your existing network setup with your IT team and Identify IT requirements for your new office (users, workstations, phones, printers etc.) Your primary concern in determining the type of cabling to use is your network’s current bandwidth requirements

2. Your Existing Network Environment

Your existing network environment plays a large part in determining the best type of cabling you should use. Analyze your existing location and its facilities, utilities and other relevant IT factors so you know what you need in the new space. Be aware of the details of the new location’s voice and data network infrastructure, relative to your current and future needs. The previous company may have been satisfied using a network rated at 100 Mbps for their 10 employees (CAT 5e), but even only 5 employees in a multimedia design firm are likely to have far more demanding bandwidth requirements than 10 people in a service based business

3. Your Expected Future Bandwidth Requirements

Depending on how you see your business expanding, also consider future bandwidth requirements. Are you planning on adding new devices like a digital display, additional printers or a new work desk for future employees. Generally speaking, it is far less costly to “future proof” a low voltage cabling implementation than it is to replace the existing cabling once it becomes clear that it is not sufficient to meet the demands of the network.

4. Your Budget

What is Your Budget for this Office Relocation? While working within a budget is certainly something you should consider, difference in costs between Cat5e, Cat6 and optical fiber and the loss of productivity due to bad cables or defective data drops is insignificant compared to the costs involved in not using the correct voice and data cabling for current and future network requirements. You need to know how much is available and how much you are willing to spend on this move. That can inform all of your management and your contractor’s decisions about how to move forward in this office relocation project.

There are dozens upon dozens of things to keep in mind as you move your business. But with some advance preparation and involving 5K Security Systems as your trusted network cabling installer, you can safely put your IT network cabling in a list of things that aren’t keeping you up at night!
